Inspired by the simplicity and serenity of the music at Taizé, I set two words, “by night”, for four voices. These words form an intimate and repetitive lullaby, unfolding gently and reflecting on rest (lullen “to lull”) and proximity (by[e] “near”). Alongside this, the movement draws on Chorus of Things, a larp by artist Adam James, which invited participants to explore voice and non-human presences. Beneath the choir, a vocal soundscape of imagined nocturnal sounds and creatures emerges and recedes. Together, these experiences are embedded, opening a space for imagination, in the final movement of the Litany.
